Commissioner, Colleagues,
just this morning, militants fired heavy rounds of mortars from Gaza into southern Israel, alarming the Israeli air and land defences and, in the end, strongly jeopardising any chances of improving the situation in the region. The opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem ignited the fire in the region and resulted only in clashes, dozens were killed and thousands wounded.
After these weeks of protests at the Israeli border what, if anything, has been accomplished? Hamas has gained more publicity in the international press and Israel was condemned for disproportionate use of force against mostly unarmed protesters. If President Trump had the intention to mobilise and inflame Islamic fundamentalists and radicals, then he has achieved his goal.
Being a true friend of Israel, we, the European Union, should refrain from such political actions as moving embassies and do everything what is in our diplomatic capabilities to foster direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations for a peaceful solution.
